(Tape 34) Forged Elegance with Cyril Colnik

Cyril Colnik was Wisconsin's premier ornamental blacksmith, born in Austria and apprenticed and trained in classical European design, he aligned himself with the Arts and Crafts movement and immigrated to Milwaukee in the 1890's. This video focuses on Colnik's life and his impact on Milwaukee's architecture, telling the story of an immigrant who lost his family, found a skill, and created a legend beginning with his contributions to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. With examples of his wrought ironwork in Milwaukee, on the Pabst mansion, the Uihlein home (upon which Colnik worked for over 3 years) and his collection at Villa Terrace. Additional footage not shown in the PBS special.

This beautifully produced tape is entirely in Japanese, but very visual, and easy to understand. It was compiled by the Takenaka Carpentry Tool Museum in Kobe City and sold to us with the understanding that it is for the education of ABANA members. The tape shows the production of several different types of tools, including a double-edged saw, plane blade, and chisels. A must see!
